2011 Grand Prix Stakes Form Guide

May 26th, 2011

The 2011 Grand Prix Stakes could be the most exciting event held at Doomben this Saturday. There’s a full field of 16 on hand including five emergencies so it will be fast and it will be frantic across the 2200m trip.

The best form guide going into the race is the Rough Habit Stakes with Fillydelphia winning that event in front of the majority of this field.

Having said that there are a couple of important new horses which could well and truly cause an upset.

The barrier draw in the Grand Prix Stakes has been very interesting and many of the top hopes have drawn wide in the field.

This has opened the race up even further and punters have a good selection of value horses.

2011 Grand Prix Stakes Form Guide

#1 – Echoes Of Heaven (Barrier – 20) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Mick Price
  • Jockey: Dwayne Dunn
  • Career Stats: 10s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Morphettville

Very talented and very consistent horse. Only issue here is the barrier and it’s a big issue given how much talent has drawn on his inside.

#2 – Equissential (Barrier – 1) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Neville O Saunders
  • Jockey: Phillip Wolfgram
  • Career Stats: 17s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 5th at Doomben

Ran home ok in the Rough Habit last start and is aided plenty by the barrier. Not beaten far by Chateau fort two starts ago so he’s a player for sure.

#3 – Hour Of Peril (Barrier – 15) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Jim Byrne
  • Career Stats: 15s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Doomben

Was second to Fillydelphia in the Rough Habit and the extra distance could suit. Another who’s been hit in the gate draw though and it’s be a huge effort to place again.

#4 – Chateau Fort (Barrier – 9) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Paul Messara
  • Jockey: Glen Colless
  • Career Stats: 5s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Doomben

Didn’t have the best run at all last start when trapped wide but still battled on to run third. If he can find a spot early here he’ll be in great shape to launch an attack late in the piece.

#5 – Turnitup (Barrier – 13) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Peter Moody
  • Jockey: Luke Nolen
  • Career Stats: 12s – 2w – 7p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Flemington

He’s run plenty of seconds but just can’t seem to find that extra half a length. Still, he’s as consistent as any and he’s back in weight from last start. If he settles he’s a chance.

#6 – Levi’s Choice (Barrier – 18) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Scott Galloway
  • Career Stats: 11s – 1w – 4p
  • Last Start: 12th at Doomben

Has promised so much but delivered so little. Last start was a flop and you can’t back him here against this field, especially from 18.

#7 – Mr Light Blue (Barrier – 16) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Barry Baldwin
  • Jockey: Timothy Bell
  • Career Stats: 12s – 3w – 6p
  • Last Start: 1st at Ipswich

Outstanding 2011 form and comes in off two in a row at Ipswich. It’s certainly a jump in grade but after winning by 2.5 lengths over 2150 he’s worth a look despite the barrier.

#8 – Leading (Barrier – 3) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: John O’Shea
  • Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
  • Career Stats: 5s – 3w – 1p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Kensington

Greta form in New South Wales but he’s jumping up in grade for this one. Three wins from five but the biggest was over 1550m so a question at the trip, good gate though.

#9 – Playaction (Barrier – 2) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: David Peoples
  • Jockey: Glyn Schofield
  • Career Stats: 16s – 4w – 0p
  • Last Start: 4th at Doomben

He’s the king of the sand track on the Sunshine Coast this year but after eight Doomben starts he’s still yet to win. He did run fourth in the Rough Habit though, place chance from gate two.

#10 – Satch (Barrier – 7) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Bruce Hill
  • Jockey: Paul Hammersley
  • Career Stats: 13s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 9th at Doomben

2011 hasn’t been a great year so far for Satch and it’s hard to pick him against this field. Really struggled last start and he’ll be at huge odds to cause an upset in this one.

#11 – Alma’s Fury (Barrier – 17) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Paul Murray
  • Jockey: Hugh Bowman
  • Career Stats: 12s – 1w – 3p
  • Last Start: 6th at Doomben

Bad barrier killed him in the Rough Habit and a credible sixth gave hope for this one. Unfortunately the draw has gone bad again, won’t win from 17, a horse that deserves luck.

#12 – The Chevron (Barrier – 8) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: John Saddler
  • Jockey: Steven Arnold
  • Career Stats: 5s – 2w – 1p
  • Last Start: 5th at Flemington

Connections are pretty confident about this horse and he’ll get a good run from eight. Hard to pick him off form but he could certainly add value to exotics.

#13 – Peck (Barrier – 12) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Peter Snowden
  • Jockey: Corey Brown
  • Career Stats: 7s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 6th at Kensington

Never discount the Darley colours and never discount Snowden. Doesn’t look the winner on paper but he won’t be last either, won’t pick him but will be watching closely.

Bet on Peck now at Luxbet

#14 – Underthebonnet (Barrier – 4) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Steele Ryan
  • Jockey: Shane Scriven
  • Career Stats: 8s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 8th at Doomben

Expected more in the Rough Habit and he’ll need to find five lengths to threaten here. Looks outclassed by these runners but he’ll plus along nicely mid field.

Bet on Underthebonnet now at Luxbet

#15 – Endor (Barrier – 5) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: G & D Rogerson
  • Jockey: Chris Munce
  • Career Stats: 10s – 1w – 3p
  • Last Start: 4th at Te Rapa

Average career stats but every result has come in his last five runs. He’s in form and he has a good run from five. Not prepared to write off the kiwi, especially with Munce aboard.

Bet on Endor now at Luxbet

#16 – Fillydelphia (Barrier – 14) (54kgs)

  • Trainer: Robert Heathcote
  • Jockey: Larry Cassidy
  • Career Stats: 14s – 5w – 2p
  • Last Start: 1st at Doomben

Won easily her last start and many expect her to do the same again. Only question is the barrier plus a couple of new horses she didn’t face in the Rough Habit. Favourite for sure.
