Peter Moody-trained gelding Brambles headlines a full field of 16 horses ahead of Saturday’s Group 3 $150,000 2012 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Doomben.
The New Zealand-bred three-year-old was particularly impressive last start when winning the the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate ahead of Margins on May 12.
A son of Savabeel, Brambles finished strongly when recording his third career victory from eight starts suggesting he will handle the extra 200 metres when stepping up in distance this weekend.
One horse that will have no trouble handling the distance is fellow Moody-trained gelding Vatuvei who will come from one barrier outside (8) Brambles.
The son of Reset came home quickly to win the Listed VRC St Leger on April 25 (2800m) and looks on track for a tilt at the Group 1 Queensland Derby on June 9.
John Thompson-trained Isopach has consistently produced solid runs in his last three starts but has been unable to convert these into results.
The Magic Albert three-year-old ran third in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill in April and since then has produced consecutive fourth-place finished in the Group 3 Franker Packer Plate and the Rough Habit Plate.
One horse coming into the race in form is another Peter Moody-trained contender in Soros who is coming off a last-start victory at Flemington on May 5.
The Lohnro colt may have just seven starts to his name but is highly rated and sits as second favourite ($5.50) behind Zabeelionaire to win the Queensland Derby.
Other horses set to line up in the Grand Prix Stakes include New Zealand gelding Urunga, last-start winner Euryale and Brian Smith-trained Arctic.
The race will jump as the fifth on the eight-event program that features the Group 1 $650,000 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).
