Hippopus will line up for the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes, which will take place at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday May 25, 2013.
The three-year-old will be looking to rebound from his disappointing last start performance in the Group 1 Doomben Cup, where he finished 13 of 14 runners.
Stable foreman Mark Newnham is up in Brisbane on behalf of trainer Gai Waterhouse.
Newnham believes that Saturday’s 2013 Grand Prix Stakes will be the perfect lead up to the Group 1 Queensland Derby on June 8, 2013.
“Gai didn’t really want him to go three weeks between runs into the Derby and he’s pulled up well so the back-up isn’t a problem,” Newnham said.
“It’s a good stepping stone to the Queensland Derby and it would be a nice race to win along the way.”
Newnham believes Hippopus will be a winning chance in the 2013 Grand Prix Stakes.
“His inexperience probably found him out in the Doomben Cup,” he said.
“It’s a fair drop back in grade to three-year-old Group Three level from Group One weight-for-age company.”
“On face value he might’ve looked a little disappointing but he was out of his comfort zone against the older horses.
“The step up to 2200 metres in the Grand Prix will suit him and although he’s drawn a little awkwardly he’ll roll forward and make his own luck.”
