Hawkspur Faces Derby Test In 2013 Grand Prix Stakes

May 24th, 2013

Hawkspur may be having his final winter start when he runs in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes at Doomben Racecourse tomorrow May 25, 2013.

The three-year-old won the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate at Eagle Farm Racecourse by three lengths last start and will be looking to do the same in the 2013 Grand Prix Stakes.

Trainer Chris Waller does not want to push Hawkspur too far this preparation and will not hesitate to send him for a spell if he fails to pull up soundly.

However, the trainer will consider running Hawkspur in the Group 1 Queensland Derby if he tells him that he is ready for more this campaign.

“Last start and this start are his two grand finals,” Waller said.

“If we get to the Derby it will be a bonus.”

Waller feels that Hawkspur is well suited to the warmer Queensland climate during the winter.

“He’s doing well. I think all horses thrive when they go up there,” he said.

“It’s that bit warmer and horses don’t like extremes, either extreme hot or extreme cold.”

Hawkspur has won four of his six race starts and has earned more than $235,000 in prize money during his career.
