Baker Pleased with Harry Ahead of 2015 Grand Prix Stakes

May 22nd, 2015

Yet to be trialled over the distance, trainer Murray Baker is confident talented three-year-old Harry will lay a great account for himself in his Australian debut; Saturday’s Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2000m) at Doomben.

Harry has performed well over his short career and is yet to finish outside the first three; earning a trip to Australian when savaging the line for third in the Curraghmore BM75 (1600m) at Te Rapa on May 2nd.

Thrilled with the condition of the three-year-old, Baker confirmed Harry has been set for a tilt at the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) on June 6th, but is confident he is in the right form to make an impact in the 2015 Grand Prix Stakes.

“His wins can at 1200m and 1400m, but I think he showed last time that he’s really looking for 2000m now,” Baker told The Courier Mail.

“I thought it was a good run because he was the only three-year-old in a very strong field.

“It’s hard to get a line on him compared to some of my other horses because he’s racing at the tail end of the season, but I think enough of him to have a crack as these Queensland races.”

Producing two impressive barrier trials prior to his competitive debut, Harry never appeared in doubt in the Tiger Prawn Maiden (1200m) at New Plymouth first-up on April 2nd; hitting the line close to two lengths in the clear of his closest rivals.

Unlucky to be checked early during the running of the VRC Tropy (1400m) at Ellerslie a fortnight later, the Sir Percy gelding mustered an impressive turn of foot in the final straight to post another good win.

Included in a talented and capacity field of three-year-old colts and geldings, Harry has been confirmed to be partnered by leading Hong Kong-based hoop Zac Purton and will need some luck in running from barrier 12.
